About
Subrata Mondal (39), of Botiaghata village in Botiaghata upazila, Khulna, holds an English degree from BL College and works for a private organisation; worried about job security, in 2018 he set out to plant malta and chui jhal on one acre given to him by his father, Niharranjan. Taking the idea from Khulna's tree fair and advice from agriculture officers and the Daulatpur Horticulture Centre, he raised the paddy land in early 2019 and in June planted BARI-1 malta saplings, with chui jhal between the trees and seedless lemons along the boundary. The garden has 308 malta trees, about 1,800 chui jhal plants and 140 seedless lemon trees. From some 200 chui plants he has sold about 2,500 kg of chui for around Tk 12.5 lakh; each plant gives 10-12 kg and the wholesale price is at least Tk 500 a kg. He gave the first year's malta to relatives and neighbours. One full-time worker is employed, paid from lemon sales. People from the area now come to see the garden, and the upazila agriculture office advises him regularly.
