About
Sumon Mia, a college student from Koiyadi village in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, grows 13 varieties of grapes on just seven decimals of land. He is a third-year social work honours student at Sakhipur Government Mujib College in Tangail; his father's farming and the family's pesticide shop in the local market drew him to agriculture. After learning methods on YouTube and Facebook he planted 27 Indian-variety saplings from Jashore beside his home in 2022, but the first crop was not sweet. He then rebuilt the garden with 60 saplings of 13 varieties from Natore, Rajshahi, Faridpur, Jamalpur and elsewhere; on a high trellis, 35 vines fruited well this year, 15–20 kg each. They need only fungicide. Local people come to see the garden and buy grapes; he sold green grapes at Tk 400 and red and black grapes at Tk 450 a kg. Several people have started growing grapes with saplings from him, and the agriculture department says he is becoming skilled at raising saplings.
