About
After success with maize and peanuts, Sumon Mia (28) has grown yellow watermelon on the river-eroded Foldapara area of Gabsara char in Bhuapur Upazila, Tangail. He is a degree student at Bhuapur Government Ibrahim Khan College. Inspired by YouTube, in 2025 he leased five bighas for the first time and planted Tripti, Madhumala and Pakiza watermelons; about 5,000 plants are bearing fruit. Tripti and Madhumala are yellow outside and Pakiza green, all red inside, averaging 5-7 kg each. His total cost is about Tk 6 lakh and he hopes for a Tk 5 lakh profit. People from nearby areas come to see the field, and at least ten tobacco farmers have said they want to grow watermelon next year after seeing his results. He plans to farm on a larger commercial scale.
