About
Taslima Khatun, daughter of Toyej Uddin of Chowdhurypara in Dupchanchia town, Bogura, caught polio a year after she was born. After her husband disappeared she has lived with her father and her schoolboy son Toha. Fourteen months before the report she applied to the then upazila nirbahi officer and was allowed to set up a small shop at the gate of the upazila office, with electricity provided. With help from NGO worker Motaharul Islam she bought the shop structure and stock and started 'Toha Mudi Store'. The daily sales pay for her son's schooling, and she also helps support her father's household. She used to rely on a wheelchair but saved up to buy a battery-powered motorbike, which she uses to bring stock for the shop and do her own shopping.
