About
Young entrepreneur Ujjal Mia of Narayankhola village, Char Ashtadhar union, Nokla, Sherpur, started growing mushrooms as a hobby in an unused room at home in late 2016. Without training he made losses for the first few years, then turned a profit after a short course at the mushroom training centre in Savar. When his electronics shop slowed during the pandemic he moved into commercial mushroom growing. Starting with 30 spawn packets, he now has 150 large straw cylinders of 2–3 kg and 500 small sawdust-and-husk cylinders of 1–1.5 kg. He brings spawn from Savar and makes his own packets, earning Tk 8,000–10,000 a month after costs. Many educated young people in the area seek his advice, and some have bought packets from him to start growing.
