About
Uttam Biswas, a farmer of Raghunathpur village and union in Gopalganj Sadar, grew Bhangur and Bikash brinjal under plastic mulch on 20 decimals in 2024 on the advice of the sub-assistant agriculture officer; it was the first mulched crop in that block. Even in heavy rain no water stood at the roots and no plants died; he placed fertiliser in balls away from the stems and kept the field clean, so pest attacks were low. Picking began 65 days after planting; by day 83 he had sold 1,000 kg at Tk 140 a kg for Tk 1.4 lakh. His cost was just Tk 38,000, and picking until 15 January he expects to sell at least Tk 3 lakh worth. Many have become interested in growing vegetables this way after seeing his field.
