About
Md. Younus Sharif (48) of Naora village in Joypur union, Lohagara upazila, Narail, has become self-reliant through dairy farming. In 2002, inspired by a dairy farm at a relative's house, he and his wife Renuka Begum started with two Friesian cows. In 2022 he had four cows and three calves; two cows were in calf and the other two gave 35 kg of milk a day. He grows napier grass on 50 decimals beside the house, enough green fodder for seven cattle, and also feeds oil cake, bran and calcium. Selling milk at Tk 50 per kg brings in about Tk 52,500 a month against average monthly costs of Tk 30,000, and he can sell each calf for Tk 70,000–80,000. Alongside the farm he also trades in fresh produce, and with this income he is educating his three children.
