40,000 taka from cattle, 18 months of labour for the rest, now 12,000-15,000 a day
A cement pillar factory priced at 2.8 lakh taka was bought with 40,000 taka in hand, the balance worked off under an 18-month labour contract. Two units now make 600-650 pillars a day for 12,000-15,000 taka of profit.
This owner in Tiruil village, Baraigram, Natore, started out as a labourer. When he bought a cement pillar factory priced at 2 lakh 80 thousand taka, all he held was 40,000 taka raised by selling cattle; he settled the balance by working an eighteen-month labour contract at his uncle's factory. His two units now turn out 600-650 pillars a day. Between 1.5 and 2 lakh taka goes in daily and 12,000-15,000 taka comes back as profit - 20-25 taka a pillar on a selling price of 215-220. About 80 people work across the two factories and around 80 families depend on the trade, with pillars going out to Natore, Rajshahi, Faridpur, Kushtia and Khulna.
Lessons
- 1.Labour can stand in for money: a 2.8 lakh taka factory was bought with 40,000 taka in hand and an 18-month labour contract for the rest
- 2.The margin is 20-25 taka a pillar: income here comes from volume, not markup, and it needs 600-plus a day to add up
