80 lakh taka into one coffee shop, and another's day going from 2,000 taka to 30,000
One Bashundhara coffee shop took about 80 lakh taka to build. Another was taking 1,500-2,000 taka a day when it opened in January 2024 and now takes 20,000-30,000.
Independent coffee shops in Dhaka, built as their owners' own brands rather than bought as franchises, were reported to be growing fast. The coffee market is expanding about 56 percent a year against roughly 5 percent for tea, and imports rose from 264 tonnes in 2012 to 1,745 tonnes in 2022. The owner of a cafe in Bashundhara put the investment in that single outlet at about 80 lakh taka, with another under construction on the same site. Another shop was taking 1,500-2,000 taka a day when it opened in January 2024 and now takes 20,000-30,000, with a second branch planned for Motijheel. A third operator runs three outlets with a fourth being built. The first months say almost nothing about whether such a shop will work, which is where the risk sits. Monthly profit and rent figures are not given in the report.
Lessons
- 1.A coffee shop is a fit-out business before it is a drinks business: about 80 lakh taka went into one outlet before a cup was sold
- 2.The first months are the test: 1,500-2,000 taka a day is not a viable shop, and only the climb to 20,000-30,000 made it one
