Lost about 400 ducks in a day, restarted from Saudi Arabia; now 750 ducks and Tk 2-3 thousand daily profit
A young man in Mirzaganj, Patuakhali started duck farming in 2020 and lost about 400 ducks to disease in one day. He went to Saudi Arabia, learned from YouTube and now runs a restarted farm through his family by video call, making Tk 2-3 thousand a day.
A young man from a poor village family in Mirzaganj, Patuakhali left school after class five. In 2020 he started duck farming to support the family. After a few months of the first round, when the local canals and wetlands dried up, he sold the ducks at a good profit. He then bravely bought 700 ducklings at once. When they reached laying age, an unidentified disease killed about 400 of them in a single day, and he had to sell the rest at a loss. Around the same time his father fell ill and had a toe amputated, and, sunk in debt, he left for Saudi Arabia in 2022. There he learned duck-keeping rules, disease treatment and feed management from YouTube, then restarted the farm, buying 460 ducks from a farmer in Pirojpur at Tk 40,000 per hundred and another 300 from the Pakhimara area of Patuakhali. According to Prothom Alo, the farm now has about 750 ducks and gives 300 to 450 eggs a day, sold for Tk 5,000 to 5,500. After all costs, Tk 2,000 to 3,000 a day is left as profit. His parents and wife do the work, and he gives instructions on feed and medicine by video call. He hopes to pay off his debt, save some money and return home to build a bigger farm.
Lessons
- 1.A disease at laying age can destroy a flock in a day; learn to recognise and treat disease before scaling up.
- 2.Growing in steps rather than buying a huge lot at once cuts risk.
- 3.Debt and medical bills can derail a farm; sharing the work with family let it run even from abroad.
