250 seedless lemon saplings, about Tk 1 lakh first-year cost; roughly Tk 40,000 a month
A farmer in Shalikha, Magura, planted 250 seedless lemon saplings in early 2019 at a first-year cost of about Tk 1 lakh. Fruiting from the next year, he now sells about Tk 10,000 of lemons a week.
According to an Ajker Patrika report, a farmer in Srihatta village, Shalikha upazila, Magura, planted 250 grafted seedless lemon saplings on two bigha in early 2019. Counting saplings, planting, land preparation, irrigation and fertiliser, his first-year cost was about Tk 1 lakh. The trees began fruiting the very next year. The year after that, about Tk 1 lakh worth of lemons per bigha was sold. He says this year's sales will exceed last year's. He now sells about Tk 10,000 of lemons a week, which makes his monthly income about Tk 40,000. By the report's calculation, yearly income is Tk 2.5 to 3 lakh, which is not easy to get from other crops. In only three years he has become a lakhpati, and people around him are showing interest after seeing his success. The upazila agriculture officer says lemon is grown on 20 hectares in the upazila: 10 hectares seedless, 5 hectares China and 5 hectares other kagzi lemon. Because of high yield, plenty of juice and strong demand, the lemons are marketed in Dhaka and elsewhere. The officer considers the crop very profitable.
Lessons
- 1.Seedless lemon takes about a year to fruit, so keep enough capital to cover the first-year costs.
- 2.Regular weekly sales give you a steady monthly income to plan around.
- 3.Before planting, talk to the local agriculture officer about variety and marketing.
