A 2014 shop selling Chinese electrical goods, then own imports and a factory; now Tk 8-10 lakh in daily sales
After graduating, a young man opened a shop called Maa Electric in 2014 on a friend's advice, buying Chinese goods from importers to resell. In 2015 he got his own import licence and in 2017 imported three machines to start manufacturing; his factory now makes about 800 kinds of products.
A Business Standard report described an entrepreneur from Nawabganj. After graduating in 2014, he started an electrical products business on a friend's advice. At his shop, Maa Electric, he sold Chinese goods bought from various importers. In 2015 he got a licence and began importing himself, while also selling local manufacturers' products. In 2017 he imported three machines and went into production. His factory now makes about 800 types of electrical products, employs 30-35 workers and sells Tk 8-10 lakh worth of goods a day. The report says more than 2,500 new entrepreneurs like him have entered electrical manufacturing over 10 years; many started with Tk 3-5 lakh and now run working capital of up to Tk 1 crore. Around 60,000 retail shops sell electrical products nationwide, and Nawabpur in Dhaka, the largest electric market, has about 5,000. Most sell non-brand goods; one shop owner said a dozen light sockets from a small factory cost Tk 50-80, against Tk 150-200 from a big brand. Big companies warn, however, that electrical goods involve safety; the market is flooded with cheap low-quality and counterfeit products, and poor quality risks accidents.
Lessons
- 1.Start by reselling from importers to learn the market; move to your own imports or production only once you understand demand and suppliers.
- 2.Non-brand goods give better margins, but electrical items need safety; selling poor or counterfeit goods risks accidents and your reputation.
