What workedTwo young cake sellers in Patuakhali, in a Prothom Alo report · Started in 2019

5,000 taka and a Facebook page, now 16-20 lakh taka of sales a month

Started in 2019 with 5,000 taka and a Facebook page, at first reselling cakes sent down from Dhaka by launch. It now has four outlets across Patuakhali and Barguna, 35 staff and monthly sales of 16-20 lakh taka.

Unable to find a decent birthday cake in Patuakhali, two first-year university friends started selling cake in 2019 with 5,000 taka, a Facebook page and a logo. At first they baked nothing themselves: cakes came down from Dhaka by launch and they delivered them in the district town, which proved there were buyers before any kitchen was built. When the pandemic nearly stopped the delivery business they moved to physical outlets instead. They now run four branches, two in Patuakhali and two in Barguna, with 35 staff and a corporate office, and monthly sales of 16-20 lakh taka. Monthly profit, and how long the first income took to arrive, are not given in the report.

Lessons

  1. 1.Reselling someone else's product first is the cheapest way to prove demand: the first cakes came by launch from Dhaka
  2. 2.A district town with no good supplier is an opening, and 5,000 taka was enough to find out whether anyone would pay
