Mixed experienceA woman running an online shop and a parlour in Patuakhali, in a Prothom Alo report

A thousand taka a day and a parlour, and the shutdown stopped both at once

Selling through Facebook brought about 1,000 taka a day, alongside a small beauty parlour. The shutdown stopped the Facebook income, and no parlour customers came in the same period.

This woman in Patuakhali supports a six-member household on two incomes: selling products through Facebook, which brought in about 1,000 taka a day, and a small beauty parlour. When the internet and Facebook were shut down in July 2024 the Facebook income stopped completely. No customers came to the parlour in the same period either, so both income streams failed at once. A thousand taka a day of sales will carry a household along, but it leaves nothing put by for a bad fortnight. Her starting capital and how long she had been trading are not stated.

Lessons

  1. 1.When Facebook goes down the page income is zero that day, and 1,000 taka a day leaves no buffer for a bad fortnight
  2. 2.Both incomes failed in the same place at the same time: having two local earners is not the same as spreading risk
