A Tk 30,000 incubator gives 1,000-1,200 chicks every 1.5 months and Tk 15,000-20,000 a month from hatching
A young man in Nesarabad, Pirojpur who could not find a job set up a home poultry farm, then learned from YouTube and bought a Tk 30,000 incubator to hatch chicks. His farm capital is now over Tk 10 lakh.
A young man from Binoyekpur village, Samudaykathi union, Nesarabad, Pirojpur could not find a good job after his studies and began raising ducks and chickens. He had kept hens since his student days. He started with a few local hens; when profit came he added cows, goats and pigeons. The big change came from watching YouTube videos on hatching chicks in an incubator. A chick sells for Tk 50 to 60 in the market, so he decided to produce them himself. He bought an incubator for Tk 30,000 and tested it first with 280 eggs, with about 60 percent success. Now about 1,000 to 1,200 chicks hatch from his incubator every 1.5 months. Chicken eggs take 21 days to hatch and duck eggs 30 days. He buys eggs at Tk 8 to 10, so costs are low and profit higher. According to the Ajker Patrika report, hatching earns him Tk 15,000 to 20,000 a month, and the whole farm Tk 25,000 to 30,000 a month. The farm has local cattle, goats, over 200 pigeons, poultry sheds and a separate room for the incubator, and one employee looks after it. What began with a few thousand taka is now over Tk 10 lakh in capital. He wants to expand and teach educated jobless young men of the village this work.
Lessons
- 1.A chick costs Tk 50-60 on the market while an egg costs Tk 8-10; hatching yourself turns the gap into income.
- 2.He first tested with 280 eggs, got about 60 percent success and only then scaled up; starting small is safer.
- 3.Chicken and duck eggs hatch on different timelines (21 and 30 days), so loading the incubator needs a schedule.
