Started with 500 quail; now 16,000 breeders and a hatchery earning Tk 3-5 lakh a month
A returned migrant in Sakhipur started a quail farm in 2012 with 500 chicks. After Covid losses he opened a hatchery in 2023 and now sells about 2 lakh chicks a month, earning Tk 3-5 lakh.
According to a Prothom Alo report, a young man from Sakhipur, Tangail, working at a water factory in Saudi Arabia, saw a TV report on a quail farm in Bogura and decided to build one on returning home. He came back in 2011 after six years abroad, visited the Bogura farm and took advice from an experienced farmer. In early 2012 he started a farm on 20 decimals beside his home with 500 quail chicks brought from Bogura. Within three years the flock passed 12,000. Selling quail and eggs went well until 2020, but Covid brought a big loss; many quit but he did not. In 2023 he started a quail hatchery. The farm now has about 16,000 breeding mother quail laying 10,000-12,000 hatching eggs a day, which hatch after 17 days. About 2 lakh chicks a month are sold to farmers across many districts at Tk 7-8 each, with a profit of Tk 2-3 per chick. Monthly income is Tk 3-5 lakh. Five workers are employed, a generator starts when power fails, and he has his own feed machine. At least five or six people in Sakhipur have started quail farms after seeing his.
Lessons
- 1.Before starting a hatchery, visiting an experienced farmer's farm and taking advice pays off.
- 2.After a shock like the pandemic, he recovered by finding a new line, selling chicks rather than just birds and eggs.
- 3.A generator for power cuts and your own feed machine make a hatchery and its costs easier to manage.
