A 2.5-lakh turkey farm shut within a year
The farm opened in early 2019 with about 250,000 taka and 70 chicks, selling 40-50 hatching eggs a week at 400 taka a dozen. The only buyers were people starting turkey farms, and it closed in February 2020.
This farmer in Sreepur, Gazipur, opened a turkey farm in early 2019 at the height of the turkey craze, with about 250,000 taka and 70 chicks. At the start he sold 40 to 50 hatching eggs a week at around 400 taka a dozen. But the buyers were entirely people who wanted to start turkey farms of their own; there was no market underneath of anyone eating turkey meat. Once new farms stopped opening, egg and bird prices collapsed with no consumer demand to hold them up. Roughly a year after opening, in February 2020, he shut the farm and lost the whole investment. Nationally, turkey farms fell from about 5,000 in 2016-17 to roughly 20.
Lessons
- 1.If your buyers are only other people starting the same business, the market is a pyramid and it ends the moment new entrants stop
- 2.Check that ordinary consumers actually want the product before investing: demand for turkey meat never materialised here
