Summer tomato costs 150,000-180,000 taka a bigha, sells for over 350,000 and nets 150,000-200,000. Wholesale from the field held at 65-70 taka a kilo against 100 taka retail.

This farmer in Nagarghata union, Tala upazila, Satkhira, is one of the growers who raise tomato in the summer off-season under raised trellises and rain shelters, when winter tomato is not on the market. About 60 bighas were planted across the union and 75 across the upazila. The structures and extra care push the cost to 150,000-180,000 taka a bigha, well above winter tomato. Yield was good this season and the price held: wholesale from the field ran at 65-70 taka a kilo against 100 taka retail. That gave him and other growers in the area over 350,000 taka of sales a bigha and a net profit of 150,000 to 200,000.

  1. 1.The whole margin comes from selling off-season when winter tomato is unavailable: the premium price, not the yield, pays back the high per-bigha cost
  2. 2.At 150,000-180,000 taka a bigha this is one of the most capital-intensive vegetable crops, so a single failed plot is a large loss
