No job found, so he sold fish online: 40-plus species and work for over 20 people
An educated young man from Khulna, unable to find a job, built an online business that collects country fish from ghers and ponds, processes it and delivers it to Dhaka and other cities. It now supplies over 40 species online and wholesale.
An educated young man in Khulna tried hard but could not find a job. He decided to start his own venture and chose fish selling, a trade traditionally looked down on. His firm, Gramya Sundarban dot com, is an online ready-to-cook fish platform. He and his team collect country fish farmed in ghers and ponds, process it and deliver it to Dhaka and other cities. They now supply more than 40 species online and wholesale. According to the report, over 20 people have found work there: women doing processing, packaging assistants, delivery riders and a marketing team. The venture is backed by financial support from the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and the RMTP project implemented by Nabolok Parishad, with IFAD and DANIDA as international partners. A Nabolok officer says they want entrepreneurs who read the market and use technology. His goal is to take safe country fish to foreign markets and to make the firm a national brand one day. The report gives no sales figures or starting capital.
Lessons
- 1.Even an overlooked trade can find a niche by adding ready-to-cook processing and online selling.
- 2.Collecting, processing, packaging and delivery are separate jobs that each need people, so building a team matters.
- 3.Look into development-agency and project support; this venture had PKSF and the RMTP project behind it.
