Quit his job for a date-jaggery milk-tea shop: 100-150 cups a day at Tk 30, work for five people
A young man in Jashore town quit his job in November 2023 and opened a shop around his mother's date-jaggery tea recipe. The shop, open from afternoon to 11 pm, sells 100-150 cups a day.
The entrepreneur behind the tea shop Hype in Arabpur, Jashore town graduated in marketing from a Dhaka university in 2019. According to Prothom Alo, after about five years of jobs at several organisations, starting while he studied, he quit in November 2023 and opened a shop selling date-jaggery milk tea and kebab-roti. The recipe began one day when there was no sugar at home and his mother made tea with date jaggery. The tea is served in clay cups fired in the flame. The shop is open one shift, from afternoon to 11 pm, and sells 100 to 150 cups a day at Tk 30 a cup, with higher sales on Fridays and Saturdays. Most customers are young, so he named the shop Hype to attract them, and the decor blends modern and rural touches: the cash desk is built from the front of an old Vespa motorcycle, with a golpata roof, hurricane lamps, plants and some books. Five people work there, including him; apart from his own pay he spends about Tk 40,000 a month on staff wages, and what remains he finds satisfactory. The kebab-roti has also already earned a good name.
Lessons
- 1.A distinct flavour or recipe (date-jaggery milk tea) sets you apart from other tea shops.
- 2.To attract young customers, build an identity through decor, cups and name together.
- 3.Work out the monthly staff-wage cost against price per cup and cups sold before you commit.
