From 3 ring slabs to 36 tanks: about Tk 1 lakh a month from vermicompost

A homemaker in Faridpur municipality started making vermicompost in three ring slabs in 2017 with help from the agriculture department. She now makes 12–15 tonnes a month in 36 tanks under three sheds, earns about Tk 1 lakh a month and employs 5–6 workers.

According to Bangla Tribune, this woman from Shobharampur in Faridpur municipality was finding it hard to run the household on her husband's income. After watching the organic-fertiliser process on YouTube, she talked to the local agriculture office, took training and, with support from the Department of Agricultural Extension, started making vermicompost in just three ring slabs in 2017. She grew step by step: first 12 tanks in one shed, then 12 more under a lean-to; now there are 36 tanks of 4 by 10 feet under three tin sheds in her yard. Each tank gets 40 maunds of cow dung mixed with vegetable waste and banana-stem pieces, plus 10 kg of earthworms; covered with jute sacks for a month, it becomes vermicompost. She now produces 12 to 15 tonnes of organic fertiliser a month and, in her words, earns about Tk 1 lakh a month. Local farmers buy from her; one said organic fertiliser costs less than chemical fertiliser and his yields are good. Beyond local demand, her compost goes to various districts. She employs 5–6 workers and her husband helps. The upazila agriculture officer said his office visits the farm now and then to advise, and that many others have started making this fertiliser after seeing her.
