About the business

The work is carrying panels, inverter, mounting and cable to a customer's roof and leaving behind a working system. Bangladesh has three separate markets for it and the money works differently in each. First, small battery systems for village homes and shops where there is no grid, or the grid does not hold. Second, grid-tied net-metered rooftops in the cities, which is where the money now is. Third, irrigation pumps and factory roofs. On September 2026 online listings a 10 kW on-grid plant ran Tk 449,000 to Tk 700,000, 15 kW Tk 750,000, and a 10 kW hybrid with batteries Tk 1,240,000, which is Tk 44,900 to Tk 124,000 per installed kW. The panel itself is the smaller part: a Jinko 585 W module was Tk 10,400, or Tk 17.78 a watt. The rest is inverter, structure, cable, meter and labour. Since the Net Metering Guideline 2025 a system may be sized to 100 percent of the sanctioned load instead of 70, single-phase consumers qualify, and SREDA counts 2,190 net-metered rooftop systems installed so far totalling 100 MWp. The honest thing to tell a customer is this: a unit consumed on site saves a commercial consumer Tk 15.36, but a unit exported to the grid is settled near the bulk rate of Tk 8.39. Sizing the array to the daytime load pays better than sizing it to the roof.

What you need to start

  • A bi-directional net meter and its installation, paid for by the applicant, that is the consumer or the investor, under the guideline. The meter price could not be verified here.Equipment

How the work is done

  1. 1Decide which market: small battery systems in villages, net-metered city rooftops, or irrigation and factory roofs. The materials, the skills and the paperwork differ for each.
  2. 2Take a trade licence. It is issued by the city corporation, municipality or union parishad, only in the licence-holder's own name, and cannot be transferred.
  3. 3Fix a supply line for panels and inverters. Panel prices swing from Tk 17.78 to Tk 21.55 a watt, and four taka a watt is Tk 40,000 on a 10 kW job.
  4. 4Read the customer's electricity bill for the sanctioned load and the daytime usage. Net metering now allows a system up to 100 percent of the sanctioned load, where it used to be 70.
  5. 5Explain the two prices to the customer: a unit used on site saves a commercial consumer Tk 15.36, while surplus sent to the grid is settled at the bulk rate, Tk 8.39 since June 2026. So size the array to the daytime load.
  6. 6Apply to the distribution utility for net metering; they answer within 10 working days. For consumers at 11 kV and above the system cannot exceed 80 percent of the transformer's rated capacity.
  7. 7The bi-directional meter and its installation are paid for by the applicant. Put that in the contract, or it becomes the argument at the end of the job.
  8. 8Build the mounting for the roof and for storms. Panels last 25 years but a weak structure goes in the first nor'wester, and the whole claim lands on you.
  9. 9After commissioning there is an inspection, and the final agreement is signed within 15 working days of it. The accounting starts from that date.
  10. 10For battery systems, tell the customer about the incentive announced on 2 September 2026: Tk 10.50 a unit for surplus from net-metered rooftop solar with batteries, installed by 28 February 2027, paid quarterly into a bank account.
  11. 11Sign an annual cleaning and maintenance contract. The installation is paid once, but dusty panels need cleaning every year, and that income is what carries the empty months.
  12. 12Keep a book of every job's panel and inverter serial numbers, installation date and warranty papers. When a claim comes three years later that book is your only proof.

Where it works well

  • Strong fitChattogram · Industrial areas and large port-side warehouse roofs, with imported panels and inverters landing here first, which eases supply.
  • Strong fitDhaka · The biggest net metering market: with commercial and office consumers paying Tk 15.36 a unit, a rooftop saves the most here, and applications go through DPDC and DESCO.
  • Strong fitGazipur · Dense with garment and small factories whose roofs are large and clear, so a single site gives a ten to twenty kW job.
  • Strong fitNarayanganj · A knitwear and dyeing hub where daytime consumption is high, so nearly all the generation is used on site and little goes out as low-paid surplus.

Risks and cautions

  • HighDemand: Customers think a bigger roof means more panels, but surplus is worth less. A unit used on site saves a commercial consumer Tk 15.36; a unit exported is settled at the bulk rate of Tk 8.39. Oversize the array and a year later the customer says the numbers did not work, and the installer gets the blame.
  • MediumCompliance: There are capacity limits. Under net metering the system cannot exceed the sanctioned load, and at 11 kV and above cannot exceed 80 percent of the transformer. Design past the limit and the utility returns the application, by which time the panels are already bought.
  • HighWorking capital: Material money goes out before customer money comes in. Panels alone on a 10 kW job tie up Tk 178,000-215,000, and customers habitually hold the last instalment until the system runs. On net-metered jobs, where installation may take up to 8 months, the money can be tied up far longer.
  • MediumDependency: Every panel and inverter is imported. When the dollar or the duty moves, the buying price moves, but the price with the customer was fixed earlier. The same wattage sits anywhere between Tk 17.78 and Tk 21.55 a watt in the market, and warranty claims on the cheap end are hard to collect.
  • MediumOther: This is roof work, so falls are a real risk. If a structure fails in a storm and panels come down, the panel cost, the roof damage and the customer's anger all land on you. Whether such insurance is readily available in Bangladesh could not be verified here.
