Decorating gates, stages, lighting and rooms for weddings, gaye holud, birthdays and office functions. It is the exact opposite of a restaurant. A restaurant buys the ingredients, cooks, and only then gets paid. Here the money comes first. Event organisers at Agargaon say a stall or an event must be booked one to two weeks ahead with 50 to 70 percent paid in advance; large or designer orders are booked 10 to 15 days ahead and gate and stage work 15 to 20 days ahead. So the cash is in hand before any work is done, and the material, the workmen's wages and the transport are all paid out of it. The price of that advantage is obligation: once the advance is taken the date belongs to the customer, not to you. On 6 January 2026 indoor decoration started at Tk 50,000, covering the whole house, the stage and the gate; decorating one section of a house for a gaye holud started at Tk 25,000. Outdoor decoration was about Tk 100,000 for one day and Tk 150,000 for three. A gate ran Tk 5,000-20,000, a plain stage started at Tk 15,000, a car cost Tk 2,000-10,000 and lighting a single-storey house for a day about Tk 10,000. Almost every job is for 24 hours; more time costs more money.

• An eye for design and speed with your hands. Gates, stages and lighting are three separate crafts and all of them must be finished the night before. Rigging lights on a tall building carries a fall risk, so this work cannot be taken on without experienced men.Skill

How the work is done

1. 1Learn the wholesale market first. The wholesale flower market a short walk from Agargaon metro station in Dhaka carries not just flowers but lighting, event planning, catering and every decoration item.
2. 2Decide which job is yours - gates and stages only, or lighting, or the whole event. Learning one properly first is safer, because each needs different material and different workmen.
3. 3Take the trade licence from the city corporation or municipality and a TIN from NBR.
4. 4Buy material in stages: wooden frames, banners, net and tissue cloth, artificial flowers, chairs and tables, sofa sets, table tops, chair bows. Most of it can also be hired from the Agargaon shops - hiring at the start keeps the capital down.
5. 5Treat lighting as a separate decision. Besides LED and fairy lights, pixel lights are now the most in demand, but they cost more. The taller the building, the higher both the cost and the risk.
6. 6Fix your flower supplier and respect the lead times: ordinary orders two to three days ahead, large or designer orders 10 to 15 days. Many flowers come from China, so late ordering means no flowers.
7. 7Build a crew. Tying gates and stages, draping cloth and rigging lights are three different jobs, and all of them have to finish the night before the event.
8. 8Give a written quotation - what is included, for how many hours, who dismantles it and what happens if the event runs late. Decoration is priced for 24 hours and extra time costs extra; write that down beforehand.
9. 9Take 50-70 percent in advance at booking and the rest on the day. Never hold a date without an advance - in the wedding season a wasted date is a whole day's income gone.
10. 10Check the VAT before taking convention hall work. Some convention halls add extra VAT on event decoration, and not saying so in advance causes a quarrel with the customer.
11. 11Store and repair the material at the end of the season. Cloth, wooden frames and artificial flowers last several seasons, but if they get wet or torn you buy again next season.
