About
Abul Kalam Azad, a retired army member from Gaganna village in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila, came home after his service and set up a farm on eight bighas (264 decimals) growing malta, Darjeeling oranges and other fruit. By 2022 the farm was two years old; having spent about Tk 26 lakh, he had already earned Tk 6 lakh from fruit sales. On the advice of sub-assistant agriculture officer Mofizur Rahman he tied paper bags over all the fruit on his 240 BARI-1 malta trees, which turns the green malta orange, makes it juicier and reduces rot; he bought 7,500 bags at Tk 4.50 each, and each can be used three times. Ordinary BARI-1 malta sells for Tk 55-60 a kg, but his recoloured malta fetches Tk 100-110, close to the price of Egyptian malta. Several people work on the farm, and the district agriculture department advises him regularly.
