About
Abul Kashem (60), a flute maker in Shrimoddi, the 'flute village' of Homna upazila, Cumilla, has made flutes for 50 years; he learned from his father and elder brother, and his four children have learned it alongside their studies. Besides making flutes he sells them online at home and abroad, and he is a fine flute player himself. He says mouth flutes and transverse flutes are prized abroad, while the mohon flute is popular at home. Some Dhaka traders take foreign orders and give samples, and they make flutes to match. The village's flutes retail from Tk 10 to Tk 10,000 depending on the type.
