About
Shah Jamal's family in Anandapur, a border village of Burichang upazila, Cumilla, has made bamboo crafts since 1955; he himself took up the work in 1986. In the courtyard bamboo is shaved, painted and decorated with pictures to make calendars, pen holders, chandeliers, wall hangings, table lamps, photo frames, door curtains and other showpieces. He, his three brothers, two sisters-in-law and a sister do the work, along with eight employees paid Tk 8,000–10,000 a month; after all costs he earns Tk 30,000–40,000 a month. Wholesalers in Dhaka place orders, and from there the goods go to Bangladeshis living in Dubai, Italy, America and elsewhere. Demand peaks from October to March, the fair season. In recognition of his work he received the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Award on 28 October 2020.
