About
Achintya and Kanika Rudra, a couple in Dakshin Sadhanpur Rudrapara, Sadhanpur union, Banshkhali upazila, Chattogram, keep up their ancestors' craft of pottery. Sitting on their verandah, they shape small lumps of clay into cows, elephants, birds' nests, toys and much more; this delicate work is locally called 'chikon kaj', and Rudrapara's potters do it all year round. Kanika comes from Eidgaon in Cox's Bazar; she learned the craft after marriage and can now shape clay without even looking. The couple plan their products together, and the income pays for their three children's schooling. Buyers from Chattogram city purchase the neighbourhood's wares at wholesale prices, as do local traders; one firing in the kiln takes about 20 days and yields goods worth Tk 8,000–10,000.
