About
Ainul Islam, a graduate from Daulatpur village in Bagmara upazila, Rajshahi, learned about the medicinal plant ginseng on YouTube during the COVID-19 period in 2020. Having no land, he filled sacks with sandy loam on his roof and planted seedlings brought from Gobindapara in the same upazila; after a good result within a year he used their seed to grow it commercially over almost the whole roof. Ginseng now grows in about 2,000 sacks on his 1,650 sq ft roof, which he tends himself, and it can be harvested all year. He sun-dries the roots, grinds them to powder and sells it online and locally; local pharmacy sellers also buy from him to resell. 100 grams of powder sells for Tk 1,200, and after costs he earns Tk 20,000–25,000 a month. His father, brother and wife opposed the idea at first, but the whole family now backs him. He also works as a sales representative for a pharmaceutical company.
