About
Amir Hossain (52), a farmer from Putimari village in Saghata upazila of Gaibandha, once worked as a day labourer and later sold raw vegetables at the market. In 1996, on the five decimals of land he got from his father, he planted 100 papaya seedlings bought from a non-government organisation, with ginger as a companion crop; in six months he sold Tk 13,000 worth of papaya and ginger, bought 23 decimals of land, and the next year made a profit of Tk 1.44 lakh. He now owns 14 bigha: 3 bigha for his homestead and 11 bigha under cultivation. Almost every plot carries 4 to 10 crops: improved sugarcane, guava and papaya with chilli, Nabaratna taro and data shak (amaranth) beneath them, ginger and turmeric underground in the half-shade, about 500 local banana trees around the edges and Napier grass on the ridges. He uses a pesticide he devised himself and 90 percent organic fertiliser. He has received the Bangabandhu National Agriculture Award for his contribution to farming; his yearly income is Tk 13 lakh against costs of Tk 5 lakh. Another Prothom Alo report (August 2022) names this 52-year-old farmer of the same village 'Amir Ali': his year-round brinjal plant gives 25-28 kg a month and he sold 15 maunds of brinjal from it for Tk 12,000 over two years; many day labourers now work on his land and he encourages other village farmers.
