About
Young agri-entrepreneur Anwar Hossain (29) of Gomra, a border village in Nalkura union, Jhenaigati, Sherpur, left a private job in Dhaka and returned home to farm in early 2016. He began with beans on 5 bigha and teasel gourd on 3 bigha of fallow land beside his house, spending Tk 50,000–60,000 and clearing about Tk 1 lakh. Inspired by YouTube, in February 2023 he grew rock melon (sammam) on 10 decimals of family land — a first for Sherpur — using sex-pheromone traps instead of pesticide. Later, growing it on one bigha for Tk 25,000–30,000, he made a Tk 70,000–80,000 profit; each fruit weighed about 2 kg, fetched Tk 200 a kg wholesale and sold for Tk 300–350 each. He then grew yellow summer watermelon commercially, also a first in Sherpur, spending Tk 60,000–70,000 and clearing over Tk 1 lakh. People come from afar to see his fields and some buy the fruit; young neighbours follow his lead.
