Badal Hossain, a boat builder of Gobindapur in Khoajpur union, Madaripur Sadar Upazila, does furniture and house woodwork most of the year and turns to boat building when the monsoon comes. Before the rains, the timber markets of Gobindapur and Char Gobindapur are busy from morning to evening cutting, finishing and building boats, because low-lying parts of Kalkini, Dasar and Shibchar still need boats in the monsoon. He says one craftsman can build a boat a day; in June 2026 an 8-10 haat (cubit) boat was selling for Tk 6,000-7,000, and sales rise as the water rises.
