About
Rebeka Sultana Balaka (40) of Kukrail in Madaripur town has loved cooking since childhood. When her husband lost his job, in 2020 she took a storekeeper's job at Asmat Ali Khan Central Hospital; colleagues praised her cooking, and at their suggestion she opened a Facebook page called Balaka's Food Corner. On the first day khichuri, eggs and bhorta sold for just Tk 90; now she sells Tk 55,000-80,000 worth of food a month. Her biggest hit is Madaripur's traditional kazir bhat (fermented rice), served with various bhortas and fried hilsa and puti fish. She also cooks biryani, polao, fish and meat, vegetables, pitha, payesh, semai, jorda, pudding, halua and pickles. Customers order in advance; doctors and staff of the hospitals take her food regularly, and orders also come for family events. She does all the cooking herself with one assistant, helped by her husband and sons.
