About
This small shop at Bata Mor in Rajshahi city has no name and no signboard, yet the people of Rajshahi know it for its crisp jilapi. Soyeb Uddin started the jilapi business here around 1950; his only craftsman then was Jamili Saha, and later Jamili's son Kalipada Saha became head craftsman. Since Kalipada Saha died in 2017, his disciple Md. Safat, who has been making jilapi for 43 years, makes the jilapi with one more craftsman. After Soyeb Uddin's death his four sons run the shop. One of the owners, Md. Shamim, says no chemicals are used and the jilapi is made with good-quality ingredients. Jilapi is available all year, but sales rise several times over during Ramadan, with queues from afternoon to evening. Nimki and matha are sold alongside; in Ramadan 2026 jilapi cost Tk 220 per kg.
