About
Bimal Pramanik (58) of Chhoykhada village in Kotchandpur upazila, Jhenaidah, has built a farm of native (deshi) cattle. He used to work as a barber in his own salon at Sabdalpur Bazar; about 34 years ago his father-in-law gave him a cow after his son was born, and within seven years he had 10 head of cattle, so he gave up the salon. For about 25 years he has grazed his herd in the fields of Lakshmipur, Panchlia, Kamarkundu and other nearby villages. The farm keeps no foreign breeds and the cattle are fed only grass and straw. It has 10 milking cows giving 12-16 litres a day, and milk sales bring in Tk 700-750 a day. Cattle sales earn him about Tk 5 lakh a year, Tk 8-9 lakh a year in all. His wife Padma Rani helps in the cowshed; with the farm's income he has bought seven bigha of land, built a one-storey house and sent two sons abroad. Several people in the area have started raising cattle after seeing him.
