About
Rezaul Karim sells rasgolla and doi (yogurt) from a pavement stall on the main road beside Katla High School in Katla Bazar, a border market in Birampur upazila, Dinajpur. His father also sold sweets in this bazar, and it was from him that Rezaul learned to make sweets and run the business. Rasgolla sales support his family; he has built a house and bought a little land. By his count one maund of rasgolla takes 52 kg of sugar, 1.5 maunds of milk, 1.5 kg of flour and a maund of firewood. He sells one to one and a half maunds of rasgolla a day, making Tk 700–800 profit per maund after costs; sales rise on the weekly haat days, Friday and Monday. He also sells doi; selling 40 kg a day brings about Tk 1,000 profit. In Katla Bazar the syrup is squeezed out before the rasgolla are sold, so they are easy to carry, and buyers come from far away.
