Emran Hossain's Orange and Malta Orchards

Entrepreneur Emran Hossain, son of Abdus Samad of Parail village in Parail union, Niamatpur upazila, Naogaon, has succeeded with China oranges and malta. The trees in his orange orchard are about six years old, and this season some 60 trees on 33 decimals are heavy with fruit. After meeting local demand, the oranges go to Dhaka and other parts of the country; at the time of the report they were selling at Tk 7,000–8,000 a maund. He has also planted a malta orchard of African malta and Siki Mozambique varieties on two acres, where local and Dhaka wholesalers come to buy directly. Workers are employed in the orchards regularly, and he owns several fruit orchards. People come from different areas every day to see the orchard and take advice on planting oranges. The local agriculture officer says he has received an award for his contribution to agriculture. He plans to expand orange growing onto four more acres of leased land.
