Saidul Islam's Orange Orchard

Farmer Saidul Islam's orange orchard lies beside a mango orchard at Hazratpur in Agradigun union of Dhamoirhat upazila, Naogaon. After finishing his master's at Naogaon Government Degree College in 2012 and spending five years without finding a job, he returned to his village. Encouraged by local orchard owners and an upazila agriculture office demonstration, in April 2020 he leased 40 decimals and planted 130 Darjeeling orange saplings; in July 2023 he planted 460 more of the same variety on another 100 decimals. Each tree has yielded 30–35 kg depending on size. His oranges are as juicy and sweet as imported ones, so wholesale and retail traders from various districts come to the orchard every day to buy. At the time of the report he had sold 20 maunds since 25 December at Tk 3,800 to 4,600 a maund, and was aiming to sell Tk 25 lakh worth of oranges in the year. The upazila agriculture officer calls him a successful entrepreneur, and others are taking up orange growing after seeing his orchard.
