Fazal Agro Farm

About

Abul Fazal lost his job of 25 years at a garment factory in Dhaka during the Covid pandemic and returned to Baluchara village in Bokainagar union, Gouripur upazila, Mymensingh. In 2020 he leased 270 decimals of government land near his home that had lain fallow for more than a century, and built 'Fazal Agro Farm' there under his own name. The farm, now about 300 decimals, grows beans, sweet pumpkin, bottle gourd, watermelon, malta, oranges, drumstick, green chillies and other vegetables and fruit, fodder grass and companion crops, and raises seedlings such as capsicum and strawberry. He earns more by growing vegetables in the lean season rather than the main season. Twenty workers are employed and he earns about Tk 80,000 a month after costs. His dairy of foreign-breed cattle at home, started with four cows, now has 14; he sells milk and bulls, and sells grass, grass cuttings and vermicompost made from the cow dung to other farmers. At the farm's 'Farmers' School' local farmers get free advice and hands-on training every day, along with free seedlings and grass cuttings. He won first place in the farmer award of the Department of Agricultural Extension's crop-intensity project for greater Mymensingh.
