Gouranga Mishti Bitan

About

Gouranga Mishti Bitan at Kamal Munshir Hat, about 1 km from Patiya upazila town in Chattogram, is famous for its rasgolla. Sarada Das started a small sweet shop here in 1973 with money borrowed from a bakery owner; after his death in 1983 his son Gouranga Das took over and the rasgolla's fame spread at home and abroad. Since Gouranga Das died in 2012, his son Sumon Das has run the business and named it Gouranga Mishti Bitan. Sweets are made by hand the traditional way, with chhana split using lemon juice and no colour or chemicals; the shop uses 40–50 kg of milk a day on average and over 400–600 kg at festivals. On average 80–180 kg of rasgolla are sold a day, with bigger crowds Thursday to Saturday. Besides rasgolla it sells rasmalai, rasmanjari, jilapi, nimki and curd, and takes orders from Dhaka and Cox's Bazar. It employs 16 people including the sweet makers.
