About
Hajera Begum (45) of Fakirhat upazila, Bagerhat, grows broccoli on 15 decimals of government khas land on the advice of the agriculture department. She owns no land and supports four daughters, a son and a sick day-labourer husband. She received seed, organic fertiliser and organic pesticide from the Smallholder Agricultural Competitiveness Project (SACP), and started with a Tk 30,000 loan from an NGO. About 3,500 seedlings planted in mid-October began reaching the market from mid-December; being early, each broccoli sells for Tk 45-50. She has already earned about Tk 65,000 and expects total sales of Tk 125,000-135,000 by the end of the season. Because it is grown organically her broccoli is in extra demand, and buyers also come to the field to buy.
