About
Imran Hossain of Bhikni village, Joypurhat, has planted an orange orchard on 30 decimals of fallow land next to his home. He used to run a small electronics shop in Savar, Dhaka; after losses during Covid he came back to the village and learned orange growing from YouTube and websites. His first trees, of a poor variety, died and he lost Tk 1.5 lakh; then, on an agriculture officer's advice, he planted 170 BARI-2 orange saplings bought at Tk 600 each. The trees first fruited in 2022, at 25–30 kg per tree; in 2024, the third harvest, each tree carried 40–42 kg and he expected to sell more than Tk 5 lakh worth of oranges. There are no hired workers — Imran and his wife Sumi Akter look after the orchard themselves. People come from far away almost every day to see it, and many buy oranges straight from the orchard. According to the upazila agriculture officer it is the upazila's first orange orchard, and Imran earns Tk 4–5 lakh a year from land that used to give a single crop.
