About
Jelehar Khatun (36), of Banshipara in Ganna union, the flower belt of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila, grows flowers on one and a half bighas of leased land. The land was leased by her husband Ayub Hossain, a flower grower; after he died of kidney disease on 23 July 2022, she started farming it herself to support herself and her only son. She does everything — preparing the land, irrigating, planting, weeding, picking and selling — except spraying, which her son Tarek Aziz does. Costs run to Tk 50,000–60,000 a bigha, and she hoped to sell about Tk 1 lakh of flowers by the end of the season. She sells her flowers herself at the Ganna flower market that opens at dawn. From her flower income she has repaid Tk 70,000 of the debt taken for her husband's treatment. People in the area call her 'Phulkonya' (flower girl), and the general secretary of the Ganna flower growers' association speaks of her sincerity and honesty in farming and trade.
