Kalu Kasai's Meat Shop

Nazrul Islam, known as Kalu Kasai, runs a beef shop at the Kadamtali CNG stand three-way crossing on the Bogura-Bagbari road in Nashipur union, Gabtali upazila, Bogura. In the meat trade for two decades, he used to have a shop at Bagbari Bazar; after a dispute with the lease-holder over tolls, he opened at Kadamtali crossing in 2022. Here he sells beef well below the market rate: first Tk 500, then Tk 550 and in March 2023 Tk 580 a kg, when the town price was Tk 700-720. Four or five cattle are slaughtered daily and 8-10 on Fridays; healthy animals are slaughtered in the open, bought from Toronir Hat, Mahasthan Hat, Sonatala College Hat and Dakumara Hat. Five assistants work in the shop, and his elder son Hossain Al Mahmud handles payments between studies. Each customer can buy at most 30 kg and as little as 100 grams. Buyers come from Gabtali, Dhunot and even Kazipur in Sirajganj; videos on Facebook made him widely known.
