About
Ma Mishtanna Bhandar in the Raniganj Bazar area of Jamalpur town is known locally as 'Burimar Mishtir Dokan' (Grandma's sweet shop); Prothom Alo (February 2024) put its age at 76 years. Amalabala Saha, known as Burima, came to Jamalpur from Baliati in Manikganj after marriage; when her husband's small cloth trade could not support the family, she learned to make doi and sweets and opened a small doi-chira and sweet shop. She made the sweets herself, served customers and kept the accounts; she died in 2004. Her grandson Sumon Kumar Saha is now the proprietor and runs the business. The shop's kachagolla, rasgulla, pera and doi are well known across the district, and people from other parts of the country also take its doi and sweets home. Long-time worker Ramchandra Basak, trained by Burima herself, still makes the chhana sweets the same way.
