About
Manik Mia, a carpenter in Amirabad village, Manikarchar union, Meghna upazila, Cumilla, carries on his family trade; his father Joynal Abedin and grandfather Mahmud Ali were carpenters, and his two elder brothers do the same work. Alongside his regular carpentry, for about 35 years he has built boats from koroi and chambul wood each year from the Bangla month of Jyoishtho to Bhadro, earning an extra Tk 50,000–55,000 a year. People of the Meghna char areas buy boats for cutting fodder, fishing, checking fields and getting around in the monsoon; local farmers say his boats are of better quality, and thanks to him the village has become known as the 'boat village'. With this income he is educating his three daughters.
