About
Md. Habibur Rahman Matubbar of Keyabunia village, Kukua union, Amtali upazila, Barguna, returned in 2015 after about 20 years in Saudi Arabia. Inspired by a farmer's success story on YouTube, and with the upazila agriculture officer's advice and help, he raised 15 bighas of paddy land and planted 5,000 malta seedlings. A small first crop sold for nearly Tk 1 lakh; by 2022 he had sold at least Tk 12 lakh of malta over four years and expected Tk 4-5 lakh that season. The orchard also has kagzi lemon, sabri banana, papaya, Bombai lychee and mango, earning Tk 3-4 lakh a year, and two ponds on three bighas hold rui, catla, mrigel, prawn and other fish for another Tk 3-4 lakh. Local farmers visit every day and seek his advice, and many in nearby villages have started growing malta and other fruit.
