About
Rahena Begum (45) of South Char Majid village, Char Bata union, Subarnachar upazila, Noakhali, supported her family by sewing after her husband died. After training in fish farming she set cages in the canal beside her home; the first round brought over Tk 60,000 profit after costs. She has since set new cages and harvests once every three months; the household is no longer struggling. A 'floating cage fish farming' project funded by PKSF with technical support from the Sagarika Samaj Unnayan Sangstha runs in the area. A 200 sq ft cage holds about 250 monosex tilapia at a cost of around Tk 3,500 and yields about 85 kg of fish in four months; in the flowing canal hardly any extra feed is needed.
