About
Bharotetulia village in Atrai upazila of Naogaon has long been known as the 'shutki village', where fish has been dried on bamboo racks under the open sky for generations. Young entrepreneur Rakibul Hasan of the village used to dry fish on open racks himself, losing 20 to 30 percent to rain and dust. To stop that waste he learned from YouTube and began using a greenhouse fish dryer. Walled with clear polythene sheet, the dryer traps the sun's heat while exhaust fans spread the hot air evenly, so shutki is ready in 24 to 48 hours instead of the usual 5 to 7 days, and he says the fish keeps its colour, taste and nutrients. The shutki is made from local fish such as tengra, puti, kholse, taki, shol and chanda from the Choto Jamuna river and nearby beels. Demand has grown among health-conscious buyers both online and in local markets. Because the dryer is small, output cannot keep up with demand; he hopes to expand with easy-term loans and export abroad. The district fisheries office is giving entrepreneurs technical advice.
