Moniruzzaman Bakul runs a clay tile factory in the Tujalpur bazar area of Kalaroa upazila, Satkhira, where terracotta tiles of many designs are made and stacked. He says Kalaroa tiles were once in high demand abroad, and his tiles have been exported to Australia, France, the UK, Italy and other countries. Once his factory shipped 13 containers of tiles to France; the buyer later asked for 200 more containers, but the deal did not go ahead because of business problems. Tujalpur once had 14 tile factories; now it has three. He believes GI registration of 'Satkhira clay tiles' would give the craft new branding worldwide. In the area's factories sandy-loam clay is soaked, moulded, dried in the sun for 7-15 days and fired in kilns; women workers also take part.
