About
Shikder Shariful Islam (50) of Chhoto Khachna village in Mollahat upazila, Bagerhat, was inspired by his neighbour Sheikh Enchhan Uddin's orchard and in 2017 planted apple kul (jujube) on 52 decimals of unused land with an investment of Tk 70,000. Making several lakh taka in two years, he kept expanding and by 2020 had four acres under kul, earning Tk 200,000 profit that year. In 2021 he sold more than Tk 600,000 of fruit from 300 trees on four acres, and in 2022 he expected Tk 600,000-700,000, having already sold about Tk 400,000. Kul is sold from mid-January to the first week of March. Three workers work with him regularly picking, sorting and marketing the fruit. People come from other places to see the orchard; he advises new growers to choose the variety that sells and yields best in their local market, and says apple kul is the most profitable.
